allow me to introduce you to the other figure in the union square story that i recounted in the last post.
adil is the man who was selling the necklaces --- the one who took one of the sandwiches from pam and then proceeded to hand the rest of them out to others in need.
when i was talking to him (before pam approached him and the story played out), he told me that riches, beauty, and achievements can bring you a few momentary pleasures, but they will never provide lasting joy. he said that it is important to cultivate yourself as a person so that you can live with yourself and be a friend to yourself when life's inevitable hardships come passing through. the way to lasting joy is not seeking to be beautiful and rich on the outside, but on the inside, which comes through living a kind and generous life.
more beautiful words from yet another random stranger.
i'm very happy to report that some of these strangers are now a little bit more than strangers, and a couple of them are even friends.
